Łódź owes its nickname “Polish Manchster” to the extraordinary growth of textile industry in the city in XIX century. Village of 723 inhabitants became the biggest industrial center on the Polish lands with population exceeding half of the million just before I world war. Small textile manufactures changed into enormous factories employing thousands of workers and city landscape was quickly dominated by chimneys. Factory owners and bankers have made massive fortunes and spent the money to build ostentatiously wealthy residences. Łódź luckily escaped WWII damage, which make possible to see there almost intact XIX-century factories partially with original equipment, palaces of their owners, worker’s housing estates, and tenements. Fall of textile industry in the second half of XX century brought a big crisis to the city in 1990s, but recently Łódź came back to life and became one of the most interesting centers of alternative culture which draw an inspiration from its post-industrial tradition.
